The John Innes Institute began research into composts in 1934. By 1939 they had developed and tested all the ingredients that form the optimum compost for seeds and potting-on.
These special loam-based composts are called John Innes Seed for starting seeds and rooting cuttings with a low nutrient level and John Innes Potting with increasing nutrient levels indicated by the numbers Nos 1, 2 and 3 capable of feeding plants over a longer time span.
